Worked rock shelter of the Sunyer de Baix, in Tavertet, with a flat-earth chamber, stone basins and a fissure that once gushed water.

Characteristics

Location

Less than a kilometre and a half to the NW of the village of Tavertet and about 150 m from the half-ruined farmhouse of the Sunyer de Baix, which gives it its name.

Going along the road towards Tavertet, about 3 km before arriving we will see some very large farm buildings on the left. Here we will leave the road just where the entrance track to the farm buildings is, but instead of entering them we will continue along the track further to the right and after not even a kilometre we will reach the coll de Saplomera, where we can leave the car.

Description

Morphology

It seems that this is the most important worked rock shelter in the Collsacabra. It is 63 m wide, although in the 25 m situated furthest north the shelter has little depth and is not suitable as a dwelling. The maximum depth is 10.5 m. The height is 3.5 m.

In the widest part we find the main construction, formed by a chamber with a flat earth floor, very habitable. The walls are built with care and are quite thick, at some point approaching a metre. The chamber has two doors and a small window. One of the doors is very low, which is why some think that this is due to a great deal of sediment having accumulated above the level of the original floor, a hypothesis we do not share.

Hydrology

Outside the chamber, but right next to it, there is a fissure through which water once gushed (now it seems it no longer does), which filled some stone basins probably used as drinking troughs for livestock.

Progression

Once on foot, we will go back about a hundred metres the way we came until we locate a small path that leaves on the left. Very soon the path, which follows the foot of a cliff, begins to pass beside small rock shelters until finally reaching the balma del Sunyer de Baix at its southern end. From the car to the shelter, not even 15 minutes.

History

From the speleological point of view, the shelter has never been catalogued despite the fact that, it seems, it is the most important worked rock shelter in the Collsacabra. But it has a great deal of history as regards its use by man, linked to the nearby farmhouse of the Sunyer de Baix.
