Characteristics

Location

The pit is located in the municipality of Sitges. The easiest access is by going up the Fondo de Vallbona from the Rat Penat residential development. This begins at the roundabout of the development (plaça de l'Alcalde Güell), where we follow the street situated furthest to the right, arriving practically at the bed of the Fondo de Vallbona. In this sector it is wide and stony and one can walk through the middle; in some stretches we find a very faint path that passes a few metres above the fondo. Further on we find the confluence with a stream that comes down from the cucona la Sibina and, once past this, one must look for a path that climbs up the left hydrographic side and some 20 metres above the fondo, and which has some retaining walls in the middle of its route. This path leads again to the bed of the stream, near the confluence of another stream that collects all the tributaries of the area of the Bassot de l'Arbre. From here one must follow a little more than a hundred metres along the main torrent, much narrower and obstructed, until reaching the confluence of two gullies that come down from the Campgràs. From the point where both join, one must climb in a straight line some 10 metres and one finds the mouth of the avenc Vell and a little to the right the avenc dels Bessons, and still between both we find the avenc del mig.

Description

Morphology

It consists of a single 20-metre shaft; the final section becomes wider on entering into lateral contact with a blind dome conduit. The sloping base places us at -21.3 metres as the point of maximum penetration of the cavity.

Progression

This itinerary takes approximately 1 hour.

History

The avencs Ramon Valls, Bessons and Vell were known to Gilberto, who was a tenant farmer of the Pleta until the middle of 1964. In the early summer of 1958 this man accompanied members of the SES-Puigmal to the mouth of what would be the avenc Ramon Valls and which they fully explored on 17 August of that same year (not 1960 as is said in the Garraf catalogue). The other nearby avencs (Bessons, Vell and Mig) were also explored by this group at the same time.
