Characteristics

Location

The easiest access is by going up the Fondo de Vallbona from the Rat Penat residential area. This begins at the roundabout of the residential area (plaça de l'Alcalde Güell, where we will follow the street located furthest to the right, practically reaching the bed of the Fondo de Vallbona. In this sector it is wide and stony and one can walk through the middle; in some stretches we find a very faint path that passes a few metres above the fondo. Further on we find the confluence with a stream that comes down from the cucona la Sibina, and past this one must look for a path that climbs up the left hydrographic side and some 20 metres above the fondo and that has some retaining walls in the middle of its course. This path leads again to the bed of the stream, near the confluence of another stream that collects all the tributaries of the area of the Bassot de l'Arbre. From here one must follow a little more than a hundred metres along the main torrent, much narrower and choked with debris, until reaching the confluence of two gullies that come down from the Campgràs. From the point where both join, one must climb in a straight line some 10 metres and one finds the entrance of the avenc Vell and a little to the right the avenc dels Bessons, and still between the two we find the avenc del mig. This itinerary takes approximately 1 hour.

Description

Morphology

Entrance in the form of an elongated and narrow window 0.7 x 0.3 metres that cuts laterally onto a shaft of -8 metres. At its base, a new narrow passage lets us enter a new shaft of -23 metres with characteristics similar to the entrance one, stepped by two small ledges and which in its final stretch gains volume thanks to lateral coalescence with a small vertical concavity with a blind vault. At the bottom of this second shaft two new verticals open up, one of 3.5 with no continuation and another of 8.3 metres with a very narrow access, where the point of maximum depth is reached at -39.8 metres. At this point a possible continuation has always been hinted at.

History

The avencs Ramon Valls, Bessons and Vell were known to Gilberto, who was a tenant farmer of the Pleta until the middle of 1964. In the early summer of 1958 this man accompanied members of the SES-Puigmal to the entrance of what would be the avenc Ramon Valls and which they fully explored on 17 August of that same year (not in 1960 as is said in the Garraf catalogue). The other nearby avencs were also explored by this group at the same time. As an anecdote from these explorations, it was heard said that Gilberto asked the people of the SES to dedicate the deepest avenc of those he had shown them to his two children, who were twins. But the people of the Puigmal gave it the name of a club colleague who had died shortly before, and the twins were left with the second in importance; this did not please the tenant farmer, and legend says that he never told them of other avencs he knew. In the Catàleg del Massís de Garraf (1) the original survey was published, made by its first explorers; but before that a survey made later of the avenc dels Bessons had already been published, accompanied by a data sheet (4). This last one has a curious peculiarity: the survey gives a depth of -38 metres, the data sheet states that it is -43 metres and a few lines further down the temperature is indicated at -50 metres depth.
