Avenc Sílvia

Esquerda de 43 m. de fondària a Mont-ral

Mont-ral • Alt Camp95m43m

A 43 m deep pit in Mont-ral, discovered and explored by members of the AA EE T de Valls on 8 May 1994.

Characteristics

Location

You get there by taking the road from Alcover to Capafonts (TV 7041); before reaching Mont-ral and a few metres before Km. 10, an asphalted track begins, which crosses the Pla de les Perdius. You always continue straight ahead, ignoring the forks, until the track ends in a widening in the middle of the forest, on the ridge of the serra d'en Clarà. From this point and in a N direction a path leads to the avenc del Cabirol. From here you must follow in direction O25N along a path opened through the dense forest for a little more than a hundred metres, where the entrances of the pits NR-6, NR5 and NR-4 are found. From the latter you follow the path in direction N33Oest for 90 metres to the upper part of a cliff of about 10 metres drop; right in front there is a rock wall that makes the space occupied by the cliff look like a channel, and at its base opens the avenc de l'Escletxa. You must descend by rappel to the entrance of the avenc de l'Escletxa; from here begins a ramp that descends the channel, at the end of which is the avenc de la Dolina. You pass over it and go towards the E through a kind of valley; 35 metres away and on the left, at the foot of a wall, are the two entrances of the avenc de la Sala. You continue towards the E and 35 metres further on, in the very middle of this valley, is the entrance of the avenc de la Formació. You go up this valley in direction E13S for 175 metres to the point where the rocky wall begins to close it; here there is a tiny little cave that serves as a shelter and, to the right of it, at the base of the cliff, is the avenc de la Sílvia (M-7). Inexplicably the colleagues of the AAEET de Valls wrongly placed it between the avenc del Satèl·lit and the avenc de la Carbonera.

Description

Morphology

It opens in the wall of a cliff, where through a narrow vertical slot one can descend in opposition until reaching the rigging of the next shaft (much wider), which is no more than another more important joint. At its base the dimensions are much more roomy.

Speleothems

You must follow in direction S where it ends blocked by a beautiful flowstone, which must be climbed with the help of a fixed rope. Once at the top, there is another slot between the formations that leads to the other side of the flowstone plug and, after various drops, ends choked by blocks. In some places, the lithogenic formations become highly spectacular.

Progression

Through a narrow vertical slot one can descend in opposition until reaching the rigging of the next shaft. At the base you must follow in direction S; the flowstone that blocks the passage must be climbed with the help of a fixed rope. Once at the top, another slot between the formations leads to the other side of the flowstone plug and, after various drops, ends choked by blocks.
