A 29 m deep pit at Pla de la Corba (Rasos de Peguera), with a 2.5 m diameter entrance, drops, ramps and blocks.

Characteristics

Location

From the city of Berga we take the BV-4243 road towards the Rasos de Peguera ski resort. On reaching kilometre 9.14 and on a right-hand bend, we take a track on the left of the road that is closed with a chain. Shortly after starting along it, the track descends slightly and then levels out. We are at Pla de la Corba and, when the track begins to descend very gently and turns a little to the left (the ruins of the house of la Corba can be seen), about 2 metres to the right of the track and inside a small depression is the Avenc del Cingle. From here we must follow the track about 10 metres further and then go to the right through the forest and continue levelling out until a little further on, on the right, among box trees and pines, we find the hidden entrance of the pit. About 55 metres E of the Avenc del Cingle de la Corba.

Description

Morphology

Through an entrance about 2.5 metres in diameter we enter a 6.2 metre drop. A steep ramp follows, by which we enter a small chamber (6x4x1.5 m) bordered by blocks. On its N side and among blocks, there is a small 4.2 metre shaft. Then a steep slope where, by a couple of drops between blocks, they lead to a new small chamber (5x4 m). From this point, and above or below some blocks, it is possible to continue a few metres more in a NE direction, until the passage closes at 29.6 metres depth.

Progression

The 6.2 metre drop can be descended with the help of just a rope. The small 4.2 metre shaft can be descended by one side.

History

Around the year 1970 members of the SIRE-UEC Barcelona located and explored a pit in the area of Pla de la Corba which they named Avenc Edelweiss (among the members of the group was Ricard Gasset, owner of the fledgling Edelweiss sports shop, many years later Balmat). Pere Cantons (then a member of the ERE – CEC) was also there. This cavity remained totally undocumented and forgotten. Only a biospeleological citation gave reference to it.

Almost twenty years later, on 17 September 1989, members of the SIE-CEA found a pit that at first seemed unknown, explored it, surveyed it and published it, naming it Avenc “gran” dels Plans de la Corba.

Our colleague Pere Cantons, who had also taken part in this exploration, confirms verbally to us (2013) that it is the same pit that in 1970 they named Edelweiss.
