Description
Morphology
In a small depression opens the narrow entrance that gives way to a passage with a couple of notable narrowings and that leads to a 2.5 metre drop (level – 10). From this point, with an irregular plan and with an accumulation of debris, one can continue along two itineraries, one forms a spectacular 34 metre shaft and the other, first between blocks and then through an 11 metre drop that leads to a small chamber that leaves us on a balcony that overlooks a 14 metre shaft. Both itineraries converge in the so-called Sala Gran (25 x 15 metres).
In a corner of the chamber, below the P-14, opens a not very attractive passage that constitutes the start of the so-called Via Nova (or Llarga) through a 56 metre vertical with a small ledge at 37, reaching level – 98, and ending blind. Some 4.5 metres above its floor, a narrow side passage on the joint allows access to a new vertical, this one of 40 metres. This shaft can also be reached through a window located some 20 metres from the start of the route (it is the most practical access), then constituting a 60 metre vertical.
At the bottom of this shaft (level – 132) and 5 metres above its bottom there is another narrow passage that links with a 15 metre shaft, normally with quite a few drips. At its bottom and, again above its floor, one can continue through a series of narrow passages until reaching a 4.5 metre drop (level – 151) and at its base, a dig allowed opening a narrow crawl between blocks that gives access to several small chambers interlinked by drops and through a narrow crawl one reaches the point of maximum depth of the pit (level – 167).
Returning again to the Sala Gran (level – 48), one can enter the Via Schibi through a small 5.5 metre shaft. This is made up of a labyrinthine network of subhorizontal galleries interconnected by different shafts and drops until reaching the point of maximum penetration along this route (level – 131).
Inside the Via Schibi and at the height of the so-called Galeria del Pou del Gori (level – 60) and on the other side of the joint, opens the Via SIRE. Going up a series of chambers that become larger as one progresses (Sala de les Banderes; Sala del Castell; Sala SIRE), one reaches level – 15, while observing vegetation roots in the ceiling. From the upper sector one can descend through different parallel passages that connect with different points of the Via Schibi.
Progression
The estimated total length is 700 metres, but surely if it were counted meticulously it would be much greater. In the survey carried out by the SIE alone a length of 578 metres was already given, to which the later discoveries must be added.
We attach the three available surveys, that of the SIE (1976), that of the SIRE-UEC Tortosa (1979) and a merging of the two previous ones that was made for the work “Grans cavitats de Catalunya” (1990).
History
As our colleague Oleguer Escolà tells us, on one of the many outings that members of the ERE made towards the beginning of the 1970s in the area of the Mola de Catí, led by Daniel Schibi (today a resident of Panama), he suddenly began to scratch the ground of a small hollow where not the slightest fissure could be seen. To the great surprise of the rest of his companions, after a while a possible passage could already be guessed, which encouraged them to take part in the digging of what shortly afterwards would be the avenc dels Mamelons.
During the exploration, on observing some curious formations that could seem like nipples, Schibi (of French origin) exclaimed: oh là là, les mamelons ! (In Fr. mamelon = nipple). And from there comes the name they gave to the cavity. Years later, the colleagues from Tortosa made their own version and call them mamelots; and sometimes mamellots has even been heard.
The first exploration of the ERE-CEC ended at the bottom of what was later christened Via Schibi (level – 131).
We know of a visit made by members of the ACE de Mataró in 1974, but the cavity remained practically unpublished. In the spring of 1976 members of the SIE – CEA locate it and in a couple of outings, survey it and find the so-called Via Llarga, where they can reach 151 metres of depth. At the same time, and without knowledge on either side, members of the SIRE – UEC Tortosa (later EC Tortosa) also carry out exploration tasks at the pit. They themselves, a couple of years later, discover the so-called Via SIRE and at the point of maximum depth, digging between the blocks, manage to reach 167 metres of depth. Years later, around 1992 or 1993, already as Espeleo Club Tortosa, they locate a new descending route, apparently of little importance and with very narrow passages, of which we have no further references.
