Description
Morphology
The entrance to the pit is through a mouth with a narrow passage that gives way to a first free-hanging shaft; this leaves us in the “Sala Gran”. In the chamber there are remains of trees that show that the pit had once had a larger mouth than the small hole that we found, and therefore, as other holes found in the area of La Mola showed, this mouth was surely covered by people who were engaged in timber extraction or who cultivated the nearby lands in past times, and for their safety or that of their animals, they had covered all the holes into which they could fall.
Progression
Once in the “Sala Gran” we find the continuation along one side of it; the way is obvious, and once past a small shaft we reach the “Sala Petita”, where we find the continuation through a large chaos of blocks, along which we will follow the small red arrows that we find there, so that everyone will pass through the same place and stones will be prevented from falling further down. Successive downclimbs leave us in the “Sala dels blocs”, and from this a small shaft slips between blocks to access the “Sala Volada”, where holes open at our feet that lead directly to the “Pou Mali”. Through one of these holes we find the head of the “Via dels Volats”, with only two re-belays, which will let us enjoy an athletic shaft with two large free-hanging sections. This shaft can also be descended via the “Via de la Y”, which is more re-belayed and which will let us enjoy spectacular views of the shaft, and with less danger of falling stones, since it deviates from the vertical as it descends. Once at the bottom of the “Sala Mali” one reaches the -139 level among a chaos of blocks with very narrow passages.
History
The pit was discovered on 18 July 2010. The small dimensions of the entrance hole before the clearing had made it go unnoticed until today, despite being very close to the forest track of La Mola de Catí, and only a few metres from the avenc de Mamelons, a great classic of the Massís del Port.
The only evidence there was at first was a very notable air current through a small hole, where after removing a little earth a first shaft could already be glimpsed, but with a block that blocked the way. Once the block obstructing the entrance was removed, a total of 9 trips followed until the great unknown passages were seen and there was enough data to make the survey.
