A 15 m deep pit near Cova Marigot, about 2.5 kilometres S of Benifallet, on the hydrographic left bank of the barranc d'en Jordi.

Characteristics

Location

It is located about 2.5 kilometres S of Benifallet, on the hydrographic left bank of the barranc d'en Jordi.

On the T-301 road from Tivenys to Benifallet, almost reaching kilometre 21 and on the right-hand side, an asphalted track starts that after 1.5 kilometres will take us to the car park provided for visiting the caves.

From Cova Meravelles one must follow the path that runs along the foot of the cliff and about 100 metres further on, on the left, we find the small, circular mouth of the pit, raised about 3 metres above the path and difficult to see.

Description

Morphology

A narrow circular mouth (0.5 m in diameter) gives access to a small one-metre drop. At the base a low gallery with a sandy floor begins, which after 3 metres opens out, on the left-hand side, into a chimney that ends after 6 metres of vertical ascent (+ 5 m with respect to the mouth). Three metres further on, the gallery, now high, ends in a chamber with abundant wall concretion but with few stalactites, and these concentrated only at the W end. This chamber can be considered the first level, since by means of two drops, one next to the access gallery and the other, narrower, at one end of the chamber, they place us on an intermediate level, heavily concreted on the ceiling and walls. We continue descending and reach a chamber whose floor is covered with stones and which has a narrow passage communicating with the intermediate level. It is in this place that the maximum depth of the cavity is found. Total depth: 15 m (-10;+5).

Speleothems

The final chamber has abundant wall concretion but few stalactites, concentrated only at the W end. The intermediate level is heavily concreted on the ceiling and walls.

History

Faura, in his Recull (1909), mentions: La Aumediella i Avenc prop de la Aumediella (sic), without providing any further data.

We have no further later news, but we imagine that this pit cited by Faura is the same one that the members of the GIE – Club Excursionista de Gràcia explored at Easter 1967 and which they named Avenc del Sifó.
