A 27 m deep fissure in la Febró (Baix Camp)

Characteristics

Location

You take a forest track that leaves from the coll de Capafons and follow it for almost 2 km in the direction of the Pla de l’Ermitanet, leaving the Picorandan with its repeater antennas on our left, and descend towards some farmland among limestones, of which it is said that the soil was brought up with carts in order to make the meagre crops. We will pass beside the maset and, climbing back up along the track, we will reach the 970 mark of the Serra Plana, where we will leave the off-road vehicles, continuing in a SW direction as if we were heading towards la Febró, leaving two small torrents on our right, heading towards the cliff face, having to walk some 700 m over fairly flat terrain, until we find the long joint that forms the entrance.

Description

Morphology

Standing on the N slope, inside a small depression with plenty of vegetation, we will find a first small pit of 3.5 metres; at its bottom a ramp continues that soon leads us to a second pit of some 2.9 metres, and next we will descend a last pit of 1.8 m. The pit gradually becomes wider with depth, and at its bottom begins a steep ramp with a lot of leaf litter and blocks that still lets in light from the wide and long outer entrance, although as we progress in depth it becomes totally subterranean while at the same time widening until it forms a more rounded little chamber of 4x8 metres with the floor full of rubble and earth. Further on we find ourselves before an ascending ramp that is soon obstructed by a collapse of blocks and mud, so we will not reach the exit below the cliff face. Its description and survey show us that we are before another tectonic cavity, so frequent in the area, but interesting enough.

History

This is an unpublished cavity that Rafel Farré de Reus made known in the autumn of 2014 to members of the GIE Montblanc. On 2/11/14 the Montblanc cavers Ramon Sendra and Joan Pallisé carried out the first exploration, descending first through the part situated further N, where there is a series of smaller pits of lesser drop and a steep ramp that leads us to a widening of the cavity forming a hall. And afterwards through the more vertical part near the cingle. On 15/02/15 the previous explorers and a large group of companions from the GE Badalona and other collaborating clubs visited the cavity to make the survey and finish its study.

Bio

On the first exploration, specimens of Troglocharinus orcinus were captured, of the Trechidae Duvalius berthae, chilopods, a pseudoscorpion, observing many araneids, collembolans, diplurans, molluscs and a bat.
