Location

Going along the BV-5207 road from l'Esquirol to Tavertet, when we reach kilometre 11.66 right at the height of the pont de Pla-sa-Riera that crosses the riera de Balà, we must go down to the river where we will find the mouth of the cavity about 20 metres further down from the bridge, in the river bed and next to a large block before the small waterfall on the right bank of the riera; this block on its lower part forms a curious and wide tunnel through which the riera also passes when it carries a good flow of water.

Description

Morphology

The mouth of about 0.5 metres in diameter gave way to a single shaft 7.5 metres deep, and a floor of about 4 metres in diameter. At present the cavity is practically filled with sediments and other materials dragged along over recent years by the floods of the riera de Balà.

Hydrology

The riera de Balà passes through the tunnel formed by the large block when it carries a good flow of water.

History

Cavity known since ancient times by the inhabitants of the area; it is said that the cavity was deeper, but that it was used to dump dead domestic animals. The first speleological reference we have of the cavity is from the exploration carried out by GE Mollet on 19 March 1976.
