Characteristics

Location

Located at Corral Nou, on the paved track that connects Plana Novella with Can Grau and Olivella, on the right an wide path leads towards Can Jaques (the friend Lluís Muntan argues that the toponym should be Can Jacas). After overcoming the first slopes by means of some zigzags, the path begins to level out along the ridge and at this point, about 20 metres to the left of the path, the mouth of the pit is found.

Description

Morphology

At the bottom of a doline about 3 metres in diameter opens the mouth of the pit, which gives access to a shaft 35 metres deep, subdivided into two sections (P.12 and P.23) by a wide ledge. At its base, a steeply inclined ramp between clastic materials leads us to a small step that gives onto a final chamber with a terminal chimney.

History

The first exploration was carried out by N. Font i Sagué on 13 August 1898, although having descended more than half the shaft he found himself short of air and had to abandon the descent. Twenty-six years had to pass for the pit to be visited again. On 7 August 1924 it was the objective of the group led by Amat i Carreras who, knowing Font's experience, took all precautions and managed to explore it completely. He deduced that the presence of carbon dioxide was due to the presence of a multitude of carcasses of different animals. It should be said that this pit, until not long ago, was a preferred place for throwing all kinds of dead animals from the nearby farmhouses. We do not know if this bad habit still continues, but it is true that in recent years some problem of hypoxia has been detected.
