Characteristics

Location

In the municipality of Sant Esteve de la Sarga. It is reached by the road that goes from Àger to Sant Esteve de la Sarga. You pass the large Fita del graller del Boixeguer and, further down, on a short straight stretch, there is a path that branches off to the right just as you reach the Pla de la Pua. There is also a marker post with a wooden pole; you can park in front of it and a yellow sign reading “CAMÍ” is visible. This path leads to the Barranc de les Vaqueres, where at first there are markers and some signs with white tape on the trees, which gradually become lost. When the streambed begins to narrow, you must watch for a marker on the left, as you have to start climbing, now without a path, over scree slopes and through the vegetation, taking care to find the way until you reach the base of the cliff. It can take about 45 minutes, if you are lucky enough to find the pit on the first try. The large 3x6 entrance is in the wall, at the base of the cliff, below an overhang and beside some reddish stones that can be seen from the road.

Description

Morphology

The 3x6 metre entrance opens in the wall of the Roca-Alta crag. This gives access to a pit with a width of 2 metres and a variable length of between 15 and 20 metres, with several ramps formed by blocks wedged in the walls. The drop is -14 metres, where a very steep base is reached, followed by a -7 metre pit that leaves you on a pile of small blocks. Towards the north the floor is almost flat; a gallery blocked by blocks can be seen. Towards the south a steep final ramp ends in a gour containing about 400 litres of water. The total drop is 37 metres (-32/+5).

Speleothems

The gallery blocked by blocks, towards the north, has abundant wall concretions, while the floor is likewise covered in concretions.

Hydrology

The gour at the end of the steep ramp towards the south contains about 400 litres of water.

History

First exploration carried out on 22 December 1968 by M. Romero and J.I. Raventós of the ERE-CEC, and J. Serrate with another companion, both of the GELL-CELL.
