A pit about 20 m deep in Alfara de Carles (el Port), with a 2 m diameter shaft and a 7 m high chamber.

Characteristics

Location

About two kilometres before reaching Alfara de Carles, along the TV 3422 road, a track leaves to the left leading to the mas de la Canaleta. From there, on foot, one must go to the mas de l'Ereta and follow the path that climbs steeply towards the Cap de la Serra.

In the very middle of an almost treeless landscape, a maple (Acer campestre) can be seen leaning against the wall. Here is the Cova del Bosc. In line with the cova del Bosc and near the cingle de la Canal de l'Ós, is the entrance of the pit, which is difficult to locate.

Very precarious situation and coordinates that only indicate the area where the cavity must be found.

Description

Morphology

The shaft, 20 metres deep, is a round tube 2 metres in diameter in its first 10 metres. From there, a beautiful high chamber 7 metres in diameter opens up, whose floor is the final level of the pit.

Speleothems

Climbing up a couple of metres, we reach a small ledge that leads us to a series of very decorated and quite wet side chambers.

No survey is available. Record to be reviewed.

History

As our friend Oleguer Escolà tells us, around the year 1974 a group of members of the ERE – CEC (O. Escolà, R. Sitjà, M. Ubach, ...) were in Alfara and explored and surveyed the cova del Bosc and a nearby pit that they named avenc del Bosc. Unfortunately, the survey went (if it was ever drawn) into a lost folder and the exploration remained totally forgotten.

In November 2014, Eliseo (el dels bous) indicates to members of the EC Tortosa the location of the cova del Bosc and that of a nearby pit. Despite the weather conditions of that day they manage to find the two cavities, seeing that the pit had already been explored since there were some old spits at the entrance. (in 1974 those of the ERE did not use spits). It seems that it could be a pit explored in the 1990's by two former members of their same club and that there were hardly any references.

In early January 2015 they return and explore it. At first they call it Avenc sense nom. While awaiting more precise data, we catalogue it with the intention that the few known references are not lost.
