Characteristics

Location

From the Coll d'Estenalles car park (the road from Terrassa to Mura) you must go up to the house of la Mata and take the path that leads to the roca de la Falconera. At the beginning of this path, and beside the bassa de la Mata, we will find a small trail that descends through the centre of a ridge that leads down to the torrent de la Font Freda. We will follow the trail, leaving some abandoned terraces on the left, and a few minutes along it we will find the pit beside a small wood of holm oaks and with its entrance protected by an iron railing.

Description

Morphology

The entrance is funnel-shaped; on one side it has a ramp by which we can descend to a not very wide opening, easy to enter but very uncomfortable on the way out. From here a sloping shaft of 26 metres follows, which we will descend always brushing against the wall and where, a few metres above its bottom, we will find a ledge formed by a large wedged block; we will continue down until reaching a cone of debris; on one side we can follow a short crawl that ends in a small chamber; in the opposite direction a steep ramp continues that ends vertically and leaves us at the beginning of a descending gallery that we will follow until it opens out into a chamber about 3 metres high, 8 long and some 5 wide. From the N side of this chamber, after having carried out a clearance, one reaches a crawl and a shaft of a couple of metres that place us in a descending gallery that goes down to -52 metres. In the roof of the gallery we find an ascending duct that ends in a short gallery.

History

The first exploration of this cavity took place on 2 April 1922 by 17 members of the Centre Excursionista de Terrassa; en Rigol Fornaguera made a first survey that was published in the Arxiu del CET no. 17 of that same year 1922, together with a detailed description. The following Sunday it was explored again. On 2 April 2018 members of the Espeleo Club de Sabadell carried out a clearance at the final part of the cavity and accessed new galleries that give it greater depth. Despite not being of special interest, it is one of the best-known cavities of the massif.
