An 18 m deep pit in Castellar del Vallès, discovered around 1972 and explored on 6 January 1973.

Characteristics

Location

Descending from the turó d'Aguilar along the ridge of mas Pinetó, we will reach an esplanade. On our left a small path starts down the E slope of the ridge, through the centre of a wide channel. After 200 metres of path, we will find the two entrances of the pit.

Description

Morphology

The lower entrance is 9 x 2 metres and gives way to a 7 metre shaft. The upper entrance is 9 x 4 metres and gives way to a 15 metre shaft that communicates with the main gallery by means of a step formed by large fallen blocks. In a SW direction a 10 metre gallery continues that leads us to a chamber at -18. The cavity sits on a N21E – S21O joint.

Hydrology

The floor of the chamber at -18 is mud, due to the fact that in rainy periods the water accumulates at the bottom of this chamber. The N21E – S21O joint was used by the water as an underground conduit, where we can see erosion forms at some points on its walls.

Progression

The lower entrance gives way to a 7 metre shaft; once descended, we will continue along a wide gallery: on the right, after overcoming a step, a rising gallery 4 metres long starts, and continuing along the main gallery we will reach the base of the shaft of the upper entrance.

History

Discovered around 1972 by Mr. Josep Lleixà, of Sant Feliu del Racó, during a hunting day. He immediately reported it to members of the Secció Excursionista de l'Ateneu Castellarenc (nowadays Centre Excursionista de Castellar del Vallès) who were able to locate it on 6 January 1973 while making the first exploration, and that same year they made a couple more visits and drew up a topographic sketch, attributing to it 23 m of depth. On one of these visits they were accompanied by Josep Maria Torras (†) (GES-CMB, in Terrassa), a good connoisseur of the cavities of Sant Llorenç.
