A 54 m deep pit in Peramola (Alt Urgell), in the conglomerate massif of the Roca del Corb.

Characteristics

Location

From the village of Peramola, take the track that climbs up following the torrent de Peramola in the direction of Can Torrent. Halfway along, another track in poor condition branches off to the right, climbing towards Sant Salvador del Corb. A few metres to the left of the track lies the cavity, at the upper part of the barranc del Rambau and at the easternmost end of the conglomerate massif of the Roca del Corb.

Description

Morphology

Within a large depression opens the first shaft of the cavity, about 5 metres of drop; at its lower part, a narrow passage communicates with a new vertical section, narrow, which without any kind of equipment takes us to the level of -24. Here, a gallery full of blocks and about 25 metres long leads us at its lower part to an impassable shaft that communicates with a lower level of the pit. Again at the foot of the last vertical section, a small shaft of about 8 metres opens and at its bottom, a ramp leads us to a series of subvertical steps divided by large blocks. It is a tectonic cavity of medium dimensions.

Speleothems

With small parietal flowstone at the upper part.

Progression

Down to the level of -24 no kind of equipment is needed and the rest can be descended with a couple of 10-metre ropes.

History

Although Faura i Sans in his Recull (1909) mentions a cavity that he calls Roca del Corb, without any further data, and places it in the area of the Ribera del Segre and in the locality of Corbera (?), we do not believe that it is the same cavity.

The first news we know of is that of a partial incursion towards the end of the 1960s by a group of young people from Peramola.

The first complete exploration took place on 22 November 1970 and those taking part were: Pere Francisco (+), Marina Poch, Cristina Herrando and Alfred Montserrat, members of the Grup Espeleològic Pedraforca (Barcelona), accompanied by Josep Pujol (+), Francesc Bonet (Nino de cal Plujo) and Josep Mª Viladrich, residents of Peramola (3 photographs of this first exploration are included). The survey has remained unpublished until now, 2013.

Sporadically it was explored by other groups. The SIE – CEA visited it in 1971 and around 1977 they made a survey, although with an exaggerated depth (- 66 m). Other members of the SIE visited it again in 1979 and made a more accurate survey.

Toponymy: On some maps it is called Forat de Nerola, although in the village nobody knows it by this name. Currently, on the track when it passes near the cavity, there is a sign that reads Forat del Corb. Nevertheless, we have decided to keep the name determined by its first explorers.
