Avenc de la Llosa

Avenc de la Llosa

Petit avenc de 23 m. de fondària a Garraf (Gavà)

Gavà • Baix Llobregat25m23m

Small 23 m deep pit in Garraf (Gavà), with a single shaft of just over 20 m divided by a ledge of blocks and a floor at the -23 m level.

Characteristics

Location

From the pla de Campgràs you must follow the track that goes toward the dump and that, once past the esplanade of the old Telefònica hut, becomes a wide path that skirts the old fondo de les Terradelles and follows the high-tension line. Further on, along the divide between the head of the fondo de Vallbona and that of the Sot de l'Infern, the path leading to the Bassot de l'Arbre branches off. About 100 metres before reaching this point, you must descend to the left, along the left side of a small torrent that flows into the Sot de l'Infern (it is the same itinerary as for going to the avenc de la Pepi). Halfway down between the path and the bottom of the sot, the small entrance of the pit is found.

Description

Morphology

Made up of a single shaft of just over 20 metres deep divided into two sections at its midpoint by a steeply sloping ledge formed by the accumulation of blocks. Its floor presents a short ramp between blocks where the cavity ends at the -23 m level.

Speleothems

Bell-shaped shaft with walls covered by flowstone and some stalactites, especially in the final section.

History

The discovery and first exploration was carried out by J. Montoriol and F. Vicens, of the GES-CMB, on 26 January 1949.

As it is a very little-known cavity, on 10 January 1960 members of the GIE of the CE de Gràcia explored it thinking that it was an unpublished cavity and renamed it Avenc de la Viola. Even Eugeni Marigot was inspired by this pit to make a curious (highly idealized) plaster model that is currently in the Museu de l'Espeleologia Catalana - Centre de Documentació at the headquarters of the Federació Catalana d'Espeleologia.

We have always thought that there was an error on the part of the first explorers when transcribing the record of this cavity and that of the avenc del Marianet and that the names of one were swapped for the other. Possibly, the Marianet was the shepherd who indicated the cavity to them and, on the other hand, the one catalogued with his name has a smooth rock, like a slab, at its entrance.

We update the record (March 2016) including the original survey made by the members of the GIE in 1960 and a photograph of the model made by Eugeni Marigot.

At the end of March 2017, during a visit by members of the ERE – CEC, they find the name Avenc de Marianet painted at the entrance. It seems that the “painter of Garraf” has taken up our hypothesis about the name change when the two cavities were published and has decided to go ahead. The fact is that this hypothesis will hardly be verifiable and therefore we think it will be better to leave the names as they have always been. For the moment (April 2017), the Avenc del Marianet has not been the object of any graffiti at its entrance.
