Characteristics

Location

From the main track of the Mola de Catí, take the cova Cambra turn-off and about 70 metres before reaching the forest hut, leave it and turn left to climb gently towards a rocky area, furrowed at its upper part by a rascler, in the very middle of which is the mouth of the pit. Description

Morphology

Consisting of a single shaft 32 metres deep, divided by a rocky diaphragm, evidence of the existence of different chambers of vertical development that, on joining, gave rise to the current state of the pit.

At the S. end of the plan, some short galleries are formed, joined by small ledges that skirt this diaphragm and, at one of its ends, inside a small chamber blocked by sediments, the point of maximum depth is reached (elevation – 38).

History

The first exploration was carried out by members of the SIE – CE Àliga in 1977, after the mouth had been opened by means of a dig.

Some time later, speleologists from Tortosa, while digging out a hole located a few metres away, blocked (we think accidentally) the mouth of the pit and named the new hole, which descends a few metres, avenc de l'Esterilitat.

At the end of 1986, other members of the SIE continued the dig begun by the people of Tortosa and managed to “punch” through at the upper part of the shaft, all convinced that it was an unexplored cavity. A few days later, once the new survey had been drawn, members of the SIE who had taken part in the first exploration realised that it was the same cavity explored 9 years earlier, reached by a new mouth.
