Description
Morphology
The entrance is elongated, 1 x 0.40 metres. Immediately the direct vertical drop of just over 20 metres is visible. Although the first metres are narrow, where we find some wedged rocks, the vertical soon widens considerably, reaching 4 metres, until the base of the shaft is reached, where there is a large block of graviclastic origin.
At the SE end, a short ramp leads to a cul-de-sac, caused by the debris cone that forms the base of the shaft.
In the opposite direction, a steeper ramp helps us cross a portal that leads to the bottom of the cavity (elevation – 28). We are now inside a large elongated chamber, with a high ceiling (14 m.) and narrow width, at the end opposite to where we entered.
Speleothems
A long flowstone descends from the front wall in the form of a carpet crowned by a rock covered with limestone formations.
Progression
About 3-4 m. after starting the descent of the shaft, a small hole was cleared that gave access to the so-called Galerías del Ciego, formed by a network of narrow passages arranged in a grid pattern with an approximate total length of 45 m, according to our calculations from the sketch made by members of the SIS in 2011.
History
It was discovered by Josep Maria Pallejà (GES-CMB), on the same day that the tenant farmer of la Mata, Rossend Boixader, accompanied them to the avenc del Tronc. It was a rabbit burrow where a stone echoed when you threw it to the bottom. Clearing was needed to make it accessible to cavers.
The first exploration took place in March 1954 by members of the GES – CMB.
Despite being a very well-known and visited cavity, it was not until around April 2009 that José Amaya began to clear a narrow passage a few metres from the entrance and, without light, using a lighter and flash, he gradually made his way through the narrow crawl until his companion Lluís Llort arrived with lighting. Hence the name they gave the new section of the pit: “Galerías del Ciego”.
