Characteristics

Location

Following the main track of the Mola de Catí and about 700 metres after the turn-off towards Cova Cambra, a path leaves to the right in a NE direction, which must be followed until shortly before crossing a tributary torrent of the barranc de la Paridora. Continue to the left of the path, in a flat area and about 300 metres before reaching the cliff that drops down to the barranc de la Paridora.

Description

Morphology

A 32 metre pit leads us to the start of a ramp, which opens out into a new vertical section, this one 17 metres deep, the bottom of which becomes a small ledge to continue descending a new pit with a drop of 15 metres. At its base (level – 64) a gallery begins and, by means of an upper passage, one enters a chamber.

Hydrology

The chamber is traversed by a small watercourse coming from the drips of the other pit, excavating a small thalweg in the sediments. This watercourse disappears on the right of the chamber through an impenetrable hole.

History

This cavity was discovered and explored by members of the ERE – CEC during the outing of days 30-4 and 1-5-1970.

As our colleague Oleguer Escolà tells us, that day one of the members of the group was carrying a radio (what was called a “transistor”) and a local station was broadcasting the progress of a race (apparently of cars) that they called: “Subida en cuesta al Monte Caro”. From this arose the idea of naming the cavity Avenc de la Cursa.

Like the rest of the cavities discovered and explored by the ERE at that time, it remained unpublished until a few years later, during the campaigns of the SIE – CEA, it was relocated and surveyed.
