Descrizione

Morfologia

The shelter is formed by one of the numerous blocks that have come loose from the rocky strata of the terraces bordering the river Set, which, having been undermined by the waters, have sunk onto the lower banks. It is a small rock shelter in the form of an overhang.

Altri dettagli

Here a group of Levantine rock art paintings is represented, made up of about 52 human and faunal figures painted in red, white and black, in a naturalistic-stylised style and some with schematic strokes. Of all the scenes represented, the one that has been interpreted as a phallic dance stands out, a group located at the lower right end and made up of eleven figures. The rest of the representations are distributed over the surface of the wall, among which are a hunting scene, another group with paired women, a group of three bulls alternating with female representations, and some goats and deer. In the upper left part there is another group representing a hunting scene, but of a more schematic character, accompanied by an indeterminate figure of the same style.

Together with the paintings and often overlapping them, various graffiti inscriptions are found in the shelter. These are about 250 signs engraved in the Iberian and Latin alphabets, as well as some engravings of fauna.

These representations, although they present difficulties of interpretation, seem to have a votive character. At the foot of the shelter, lithic and ceramic materials were collected, consisting of some unretouched flint blades, a denticulated flake, various fragments of flint knives and three half-moons, a few fragments of Iberian pottery, and two fragments of Hispanic terra sigillata pottery. In the excavations carried out at the base of the shelter in 1989, ceramic materials from the end of the Neolithic-Bronze Age and from the Roman period appeared. This site is considered to have had an occupation from 7000 to 100 BC.

Storia

It was discovered in 1908 by the village priest Ramon Huguet, who was accompanied by the village children. As in many other places in the territory, on considering that it was something very ancient they call it la Roca dels Moros. That same year, Ceferí Rocafort made them known as the Coves de Cogul, after the municipality where it is located. That same year they were visited by Ll. Marià Vidal and the French historian and archaeologist H. Breuil. In 1909 M. Faura i Sans cites it as the cova de les Pintures.

In 2008 the Interpretation Centre of la Roca dels Moros was built.

It is currently set up for tourist visits, you can find information at the website: www.catalunya.com/roca-dels-moros-17-16003-194?language=es
