Caratteristiche

Località

Before reaching the village of Alfara de Carles, a turn-off to the left leads to the centre of the Toscar. Here, and from the font dels Xorros, skirting the chapel of Santa Magdalena, you must continue to a crossroads where you turn left, and two bends further up is the font del Ferro. Follow the tarmac road that leads to some little houses in the upper part of the Toscar, and once past them, on a left-hand bend there is a sign indicating the path that climbs to the right towards Cova Pintada.

Descrizione

Morfologia

It is a large shelter with a passage that penetrates a few metres. No survey is available and therefore we do not know the exact dimensions of the shelter.

Concrezioni

Different mineral tones paint the speleothems that cling to the walls of the cavity.

Idrologia

In times of heavy rain, the upper ravine drops a great curtain of water that covers the mouth of the cave.

Progressione

The path is steep, with a long continuous gradient that goes deeper towards the head of the barranc de la Conca. At approximately 1.5 km the path forks. To the right and on a slight descent you reach the ravine recess that forms the Cova Pintada.

Altri dettagli

To distinguish it from its namesake on the slopes of Mont Caro, we have chosen to index it as Pintada d'Alfara.

Storia

Known since remote times. The oldest citation that we have been able to find corresponds to E. Bayerri who, in his Historia de Tortosa y su comarca. Vol.II (1934) mentions it, saying that it is found on the slopes of the Toscar and that in times of heavy rain, the upper ravine drops a great curtain of water that covers the mouth of the cave.
