Caratteristiche

Località

The rock shelter is located in the Serra de Sant Gervàs (Tremp). There are a couple of options for reaching it. One of them can be done from the Torre de Tamúrcia (Tremp): past the village you must take a track on the left in the direction of Casa Jaumet, cross the barranc de Miralles (from this point on a 4x4 vehicle) and the corrals de Sallants, where we will leave the vehicle 10 minutes from the ermita de Sant Gervàs. We will follow the path that climbs steeply towards the Pas del Portús, until we find a hypothetical turn-off to the left that heads towards the W following the base of the cliff; at a great distance, first we will find the Forat Roig, recognisable by its large mouth and some large blocks that are at the entrance. To reach the Cova Gran it is still necessary to cover one more kilometre towards the W.

There is another access which, although longer in distance, is gentler: you must go along the road from Senterada to Pont de Suert and turn off towards Adons (Pont de Suert); once in the village we will leave the vehicle and follow the path that climbs up to the Pas del Portús; once past this we will follow the base of the cliff towards the W, as far as the Forat Roig, to which there is almost a kilometre, and from this to the cova Gran there is another kilometre. All this stretch is done along a faint path between scree and box trees; from time to time a cairn is found.

Descrizione

Morfologia

It is a large, clear rock shelter with a portal of large dimensions (44x28 metres) which within a few metres already narrows considerably (9.65x24.5 metres). The cavity is entirely ascending and almost at the end an ascending step of about 5 metres must be overcome. In the roof of this gallery some chimneys can be seen and on its side, an elevated platform above the base of the gallery and the initial esplanade. At the E end of the rock shelter some dry-stone retaining wall of the esplanade can be seen and in the roof another notable chimney of unknown ascent. The cave has a passage of 31 metres and a positive height difference of +15 metres.

Storia

Although long known to the local people, the first speleological mention that we know of is provided by R. Jeannel, who visited it on 18-7-1911 during his biospeleological campaigns. It is not until 25-9-1977 that it is visited again by Oleguer Escolà and members of the ERE – CEC, also for biospeleological purposes.
