Caratteristiche

Località

2.3 km NE of the village of Sant Esteve d'en Bas, on the western foothills of the serra de Marboleny. To get there, we opted for the route we believed to be the shortest, starting from the paved track that leads to the Xenacs recreational area, though it should be noted that the track is closed with a barrier on weekdays and only opens at weekends. The track starts from the right-hand side of the road, about one kilometre before reaching the village of les Preses (coming from the south). On some of the bends the track gains height, and when we are a little less than a kilometre from Xenacs we will have to leave the vehicle to follow an ascending path that leaves from a left-hand bend. Very soon we will reach the ridge, along which runs a ridge path that we will cross in order to descend the other slope. We will not take long to pass by the ruins of the house of Llosassos. From here the path becomes fainter as it enters the wood and we will need to watch out for cairns made with stones. First we will reach the cova d'en Vila. The cova Gran d'en Vila is 65 m away in an almost northerly direction.

Descrizione

Morfologia

The entrance gallery is comfortable, but at 6 m the ceiling suddenly lowers and forces us to crouch momentarily before entering the main chamber of the cave, which is very flat. At its far end a gallery 9 m long begins, slightly ascending, along which we must advance crawling or dragging ourselves before it becomes impassable.

The adjective gran in the name of the cave refers to the good size of the entrance, quite spectacular, although the speleometry of the cavity is smaller than that of the neighbouring cave.

Storia

Known to local people and local hikers.

The place name Coves d'en Vila appears labelled on the Garrotxa map by the publisher Alpina, even in editions from many years ago, although it places it slightly further south than the place where the caves are actually found. Also, the place name Coves d'en Vila appears labelled on the ICGC map.

Despite these antecedents, the caves have surprisingly gone unnoticed by speleologists. Thus, members of the ECM Barcelonès and the GE Badalona located them and carried out the study on 22 June 2024.
