Caratteristiche

Località

2.3 km NE of the village of Sant Esteve d'en Bas, on the western foothills of the serra de Marboleny.

To get there, starting from the paved track that leads to the Xenacs recreational area, note that the track is closed with a barrier on weekdays and only opens at weekends. The track starts from the right-hand side of the road, about a kilometre before reaching the village of les Preses (coming from the south). On some of the bends the track gains height and when just over a kilometre remains to reach Xenacs you must leave the vehicle to follow an ascending path that leaves from a left-hand bend. Very soon you reach the ridge, along which runs a ridge path that must be crossed in order to descend the other slope. It is not long before you pass beside the ruins of the house of Llosassos. From here the path becomes fainter on entering the wood and you must watch out for cairns made with stones. First you reach the cova d'en Vila. The cova Gran d'en Vila is 65 m away in an almost northerly direction.

Descrizione

Morfologia

The entrance leads to a two-metre drop. It places us in the upper part of a chamber with a sloping floor covered with numerous blocks. The chamber has a more or less triangular shape, with dimensions of the order of 12 x 10 m. At the opposite end from the entrance a small upward step places us in a gallery 10 m long.

Concrezioni

Although the rock is mostly bare, in some places we find well-developed parietal-type concretions.

Progressione

A precarious ladder made of logs helps us to overcome the two-metre drop.

Storia

Known to local people and local hikers.

The place name Coves de la Vila appears labelled on the Garrotxa map of Editorial Alpina, even in editions from many years ago, although it places it slightly further south than the place where the caves are actually found. Also, the place name Coves d'en Vila appears labelled on the ICC map.

Despite these antecedents, the caves have surprisingly gone unnoticed by speleologists. Thus, members of the ECM Barcelonès and of the GE Badalona located them and made the study on 22 June 2024.
