Descrizione
Morfologia
Its large mouth is 12 by 12 metres with a water depth of 6 metres. From the same mouth a gallery branches off to the right with a passage of 37 metres, which although it appears very narrow, the submerged part is 4 metres wide. The depth gradually decreases until reaching a small beach at the end. At 14 metres along this gallery another one branches off to the left, 20 metres long, with the same characteristics but narrower.
Returning to the mouth, we can follow the wide entrance gallery until we find a fork. To the right the gallery has a passage of 32 metres, it is very low but 3 metres wide, and ends in a chamber from which three short joint fissures emerge, each with a small beach at the end. The left gallery narrows to 1.5 metres and then gradually widens again, at the same time losing depth, until it opens onto a beach 8 metres long, with a low ceiling, and a width that varies from one year to the next.
To the left of this beach (direction S), a new gallery emerges with a passage of 60 metres that again gains depth and leads once more to the exterior through two mouths, one elevated and of reduced dimensions, and the other with 4 metres of depth, height and width.
The traverse from these mouths to the main one is 125 metres and the total passage of the cave is 224 metres.
Most of the cavity is excavated along a network of perpendicular joint fissures, with directions N20E and N70O. Not so the gallery that communicates with the S mouths, which is along a joint fissure, also inclined, with a N-S direction. The short galleries at the end of the beach vary very often in length due to fluctuations in the ground level.
It is so far the longest cave of those excavated in granite in Catalonia.
Storia
Known since time immemorial by the fishermen of the area. According to Xavier Badiella, the name of the cave comes from the tradition that says: “a small brigantine that was being pursued by a pirate ship sought refuge here, and in this way managed to escape”.
Cited in old catalogues: Puig y Larraz (1896); Font (1897); Faura (1909), which already mention much earlier sources.
Visited and known for many years by fishermen, all kinds of sea enthusiasts and by tourist boats that enter the wide main gallery.
The total exploration was carried out in the summer of 1979 by members of the SIS – CE Terrassa and two years later they surveyed it.
