Caratteristiche

Località

We will leave the village of Vilabella along the old drove road from Valls to El Vendrell, heading E, take the first turn-off on the right, continuing along a descending dirt track, until the path crosses the Gaià river.

Here we will leave the car, cross the river on a wooden footbridge, continue straight on and leave a turn-off on the right; the path climbs until it crosses the railway line. The path continues below a cliff, we continue until we find a small path that branches off to the right, marked with cairns, which climbs up to the rock shelter.

Storia

Certainly known since remote times. Its little importance has left it unpublished until the visit of members of the GE Badalona on 6-4-2019 when they carry out the cataloguing work. Given the lack of knowledge of the name by which it is known, they decide to call it Balma de Vergerars, although in some hiking notes it is mentioned as balma or cova del Gronxador.

(Note from Espeleoindex): Joan Virella, in his collection of cavities of archaeological interest published in Miscel·lània Penedesenca no. 1 (1978) cites in the municipality of Salomó the following cavity: Cova Gran (rock shelter near Cova Fonda). Without specifying any further data. We think it could be the same cavity.
