Caratteristiche

Località

From the main centre of the municipality, Sant Joan de Mediona, take the carrer del Molí and follow it alongside the riera de Mediona, until reaching a turn-off to the right that climbs towards the Can Verdaguer housing estate. Once here, follow the streets that climb towards the small summit of the Talaia and, shortly before arriving, take the street that branches off to the right and continues along the les Clivelleres track. On its first stretch it is flat and, at a bend to the right, a small path branches off that goes into the woods, descending towards a torrent occupied far and wide by an immense chaos of blocks. On the left a small crag takes shape and ahead another one, this one parallel to the torrent. Between the two, a passage opens through which the path we had lost continues and leads us to the flat area of the upper zone. Continuing to the right, along the crag, the cavity is found.

Descrizione

Morfologia

The long fissure that forms the cavity is half covered by blocks and vegetation, presenting three points through which one can enter the interior of the cavity. The most feasible entrance is the one located at the NW end, which gives rise to a pit of just over 7 metres. At its base and in a SE direction a ramp begins, followed by a small pit between blocks of just over 3 metres of drop; at its bottom an ascending ramp begins that follows the fissure below the other entrances and climbs back up very close to the exterior, continuing a few more metres until it becomes impenetrable. Again at the base of the entrance pit and in a NW direction, one can descend 10 vertical metres until reaching the bottom of the fissure, totally occupied by blocks and other detrital materials. Among them one can descend a little further until reaching the point of maximum depth at the – 22 level.

Storia

On 1 May 1973, Mr. Narcís Rucabado, then president of the Geography and Natural Sciences Section of the Centre Excursionista de Catalunya, together with his son, accompanied Oleguer Escolà (ERE – CEC) to three pits that they had recently found on one of their morning excursions from Capellades. These were the three entrances of what was called Avenc nº 1 de les Clivelleres. In a nature guide to Mediona (E. Rafecas, 1995) mention is made of this one and of the cavities numbered 2 to 4, calling them avencs del Verdaguer (sic).

But... it turns out that colleagues Jordi Navarro and Montse Mañosa, while searching for documentation of the area, were able to locate, in an old bulletin of the Centre Excursionista de Sabadell, a note relating the true first exploration of this pit. Three members of the Speleology Section of the CE Sabadell (F. Barceló, M. Garriga and J. Sallent), accompanied by three people from Sant Quintí de Mediona, explored the pit on 29 August 1954. In this brief account they comment on the difficulties of the exploration due to a series of block falls that had no serious consequences. They also mention having made a survey and that they calculate that the cavity is 37 m deep and 66 m long.

In view of these developments and also that in Mediona they know them by the name of the mas de Can Verdeguer, we have decided to rename the group of cavities with the name of the mas that gives its name to the nearby housing estate. We keep the name Clivelleres as a synonym and continue with their order number so as not to create further confusion.
