Caratteristiche

Località

Going along the BV-2111 road from Sant Pere de Ribes to Olivella, on reaching kilometre 13.8, just after crossing the bridge over the riera dels Pelagons, on the left-hand side of the road a track begins that is closed to vehicle traffic; it must be followed for 2.36 kilometres and along the route we will cross the riera dels Pelagons up to six times. Almost reaching the end of the route we will leave the masia dels Pelagons de Baix (in ruins) on the right. Once past it we still cross the riera twice more; after crossing the last one, 43 metres along and on the right-hand side of the track (ETRS89 398474 – 4575669) a path marked with cairns starts that in about fifty metres leads us to the cavity; this is located 20 metres above the track.

Descrizione

Morfologia

The narrow entrance is located in a small elongated depression and communicates with a narrow 2 m drop that leads to a small chamber. From here and down a steep slope one descends to the bottom of the pit, which has a flat floor and is full of rubble. At the other end a short, narrow gallery develops climbing upwards.

Progressione

Care must be taken due to the instability of some blocks along the route.

Storia

The pit was discovered, at least archaeologically, by a group of collaborators of the Biblioteca-Museu Víctor Balaguer de Vilanova i la Geltrú in 1958 and they made a small 1 x 1 m test pit at the bottom of the cavity. Bones, seven spindle whorls and different types of pottery were found.

In 1968 members of GET – AE Talaia published a short review with a survey giving it a depth of 12 m (the image is practically unreproducible due to the poor printing quality).

Burial cavity with human remains and many pottery fragments dated between the Bronze and the Iron-Iberian. All these materials are in the Museu Víctor Balaguer de Vilanova i la Geltrú.

At some points the pit has been mentioned as Cova dels Pelagons.
