Description
Morphology
Almost circular entrance, 14 x 16 metres, located at the bottom of what appears to be a dissolution doline some 25 metres in diameter. The plan of the 10-metre shaft is of a substantially equal size and is full of blocks and various detritus which, due to the proximity of urban centres, have turned it into a veritable dump. Currently (2020), a railing surrounds the cavity in order to protect it.
The cavity is set in a bank of marly limestone of the Tertiary, extremely well bedded. The thickness of the strata is less than 20 centimetres and in some cases only 5 or 6.
Hydrology
Typical collapse cavity, caused by the loss of volume of the underlying materials that have been carried away by an underground water current that collects the infiltrations of various dissolution dolines existing in the sector. The age of the pit must be very recent, clearly post-glacial, and possibly only a few hundred years old.
History
The Pou (or Forat) del Diable is very well known in the area. The first speleological visit of which we have a record is the one carried out by members of SIRE – UEC Sants in 1964. In July 1972 it was visited by members of ERE-CEC and shortly afterwards, in February 1973, by SIE-CEA; both visits gave rise to respective articles.
In Sant Guim (the nearest locality, although the cavity belongs to the municipality of Veciana), there is the legend that this pit was made by the devils one night, and the earth they took out of it they carried to Mallorca. Other neighbours have even speculated that it is the product of the impact of a meteorite.
