Characteristics

Location

Located in Tòrrec, belonging to the municipality of Vilanova de Meià, at the point where the weighbridge is found, just opposite a track comes out; we will soon find a turn-off and must follow it to the left. After a little more than half a kilometre, the track makes a series of bends and descends to the barranc de les Planes; the track continues parallel to the ravine, going up it. Just after crossing it, we will follow a path on the left that follows the ravine along the other bank, but now in the same direction as the water flow. We go round a rocky spur where some water pipes are visible and descend towards the barranc de Fontfreda following the path on the left; from this point the great rock shelter of la Vansa can be seen. We cross the ravine and follow the path that heads towards the barranc de la Tartera, cross it and continue towards the S, where a small trail will take us to a cairn located on the ridge that forms the divide with the barranc de la Coveta. We go up the ridge in a N direction until reaching the tip of the cliff; we will continue to the left and descend to seek the bed of the barranc de la Coveta, where the mouths of the caves can already be seen. We will go up the ravine about 150 metres, the point where it turns to the left; from here it is necessary to go up the hydrographic left bank to the base by the small cliff where the caves are found.

Description

Morphology

These are three caves independent of one another, but located at the same level and right next to one another, known by the single name of les Tres Coves. The dimensions of all the mouths range between 6 and 8 metres in width and between 1.47 and 1.79 metres in height. Their length, following them from E to W, would be 9 m, 7.74 m and 8.14 metres respectively.

History

Although we have not found documentation about these cavities, it seems that they have been known in the area since time immemorial and used by herders.

The only reference we know about this group of cavities is the one provided by Manuel Cortés i Ribelles in his book El Montsec i Muntanyes Veïnes (1984), where he mentions it, indicating as the only comment that it is found in the barranc de la Coveta.
