Subterranean phenomenon about 50 m long between the Lluçanès and the Berguedà, discovered speleologically by Ferran Cardona (EC Gràcia) around 1996.

Characteristics

Location

It is located on the left hydrographic slope of the riera de Merlès, one kilometre in a straight line and in an SSE direction from the Romanesque bridge known as the Pont de Roma.

The entrance opens a few metres from the path that leads from the Pont de Roma to the Tor de l'Aspà.

To get there we will take the road (BP-4654) that goes from Borredà towards Alpens. Between kilometres 22 and 23, the road crosses the riera de Merlès. Right here, and next to the Puigcercós campsite, a secondary road starts that follows the stream downstream along the left hydrographic bank. When we have gone a little more than one kilometre, the road crosses the Pont de Roma. As soon as we have crossed it, we must leave the car on the esplanade that we find on the left.

We will take the track that passes under the bridge and follows the stream along its left bank. Shortly after, we will leave the track to go up a path that starts on the left. The path climbs steeply at first and makes a few bends. Further on we will cross a fence; from here on the path levels out through the forest and continues parallel to the fence (which divides two estates located in different municipalities and in different comarques). Very soon we will sense that on the left of the path there is a slight depression in the terrain in the middle of the forest. In it, and less than 10 metres from the path, the upper entrance of the cavity opens (Boca Lluçanès). From the Pont de Roma to the cavity it takes about 20 minutes of walking.

Most of the cavity is in the comarca of the Lluçanès, municipality of Lluçà, and the last metres of the gallery and the lower entrance are in the comarca of the Berguedà, municipality of Borredà.

Description

Morphology

The cavity constitutes the subterranean stretch of a secondary torrent that is a tributary of the riera de Merlès. The upper entrance, through which the torrent enters, is elongated and gives way to a gallery that quickly widens. The gallery, although irregular in layout and full of blocks, is of comfortable dimensions.

The exit entrance (Boca Berguedà) has regular dimensions. From it the torrent continues through a gorge section.

Hydrology

The torrent usually carries a modest flow of water but the sediment terraces and erosion forms testify that it can come down quite swollen in the rainy season.

History

Discovered speleologically by Ferran Cardona (EC Gràcia) around the year 1996, when, moved by curiosity about a very unusual place name (Tronassa) that appeared on a couple of maps, he decided to go in search of it and found this curious cavity.
