Other details
Toponymy: Estufador (not estofador) is a curious toponym found occasionally in various sea hollows along the coast of the Empordà and also in the Balearic and Pityusic Islands. F. Miret (2007) says that estofadors comes from Italian: 'fer fum'. Perhaps because of the foam that seawater can produce when entering and leaving? We are not very sure.
According to the Gran Enciclopèdia Catalana, estufador is a geomorphological term: 'Each of the holes in coastal rocks formed by the differential erosive action of seawater, when waves strike them'.
According to the same GEC, estufar is a synonym of to sponge.
In this specific case we also do not know whether this toponym is native to the Tarragona coast, or simply whether the explorers, who were well acquainted with the sea caves of the Costa Brava, found it amusing to name it with this name.
History
The only data we have are those provided by members of SIRE – UEC who explored and surveyed it in June 1998.
