Characteristics

Location

It is located at km. 6.15 of the BV-2122 road (between Torrelles de Foix and Pontons), a couple of metres to the right of the road. A protective mesh against falling rocks closes the lower entrance. We can leave the car about 100 m away in the direction of Pontons.

Description

Morphology

The entrance mouth, about 11 metres high, is divided in two by an accumulation of wedged blocks. The upper entrance leads us to a 10 m pit, while the lower one gives directly onto the floor of the gallery. Currently, this entrance is closed by a road protection net, so it will be necessary to enter a few metres above the floor. In principle the gallery is little more than 1 metre wide and descends in a steep ramp to the lowest part of the cavity (-14.8 m) and gains width up to 2 metres, with a height of about 10 metres. From here the gallery climbs again and in the highest part loses width (1 m.) and descends between blocks until these completely obstruct the continuation.

History

Known since time immemorial. Possibly the mouth was cut off at the beginning of the 20th century during the construction of the road. The first reference is found in the account by Josep Maria Có de Triola when, on the way to the avenc d'Ancosa (11-8-107) they see the fissure and make a superficial visit (see Sota Terra I, 1909, Club Muntanyenc).

At the beginning of the 1930's it was excavated by P. Martí Grivé, finding quite a lot of archaeological material (see Anuari de l'Institut d'Estudis Catalans, 1927-1931).

At Easter 1972, members of the SIE – CEA carry out a small campaign in the Pontons area and among others explore and survey the cavity (survey unpublished until now). Later, on 28-1-1973 it is surveyed by members of the SIRE – UEC Gràcia and published in an article about the area, calling it Cova del Pany.
