A 176 m-long cave in the area of the Sant Antoni reservoir (Talarn), with an entrance in a doline-like depression and galleries of 36 and 24 m.

Characteristics

Location

The cave is located in the area of the Sant Antoni reservoir (Talarn).

At km. 58.9 of the C-1412b / C-74 (Isona to Tremp) you must take a right-hand turnoff signposted 'Central FECSA – Nerets'. A few metres after entering and before crossing the Gavet canal, you must turn left to follow the track that leads to les Ínsules, cross two bridges and leave on the left the track we were following towards les Ínsules and continue to the right until the end, where we will find a modern construction surrounded by fields. You must follow them in a NE direction to the end of the field where a path leads us to a stream that must be followed on the left until passing some blocks, the start of the platform where the group of cracks of els Nerets is found.

At the upper part of the platform, very visible and not far from the retaining wall that was built to divert the reservoir's outflow and direct the waters towards the lower ravine, is cave no. 1 and about 100 metres to the NW, very close to the cliff, this cave no. 2 is located. No. 3 is about 30 metres to the NW of no. 2 and inside a large depression.

Description

Morphology

The entrance opens at the bottom of a natural depression, of doline type, excavated in a limestone level, intercalated between the dominant sandstones.

The cave entrances give way to a low-ceilinged vestibule from which emerges what we could call the main gallery and two branches. The main gallery, 36 metres long, takes the general directions of cave no. 2 and leads out at the cliff. The first branch is a descending gallery with a progressive slope that after 24 metres ends in a circular little room with a very low ceiling, and from where on the S side an ascending parallel gallery emerges, which ends in an upper little room connected to the entrance one. From this room a series of ramifications emerge that were not explored and the cave can probably continue at this point.

Unlike the other neighbouring cavities, this one presents a wider sector with a low ceiling determined by having been excavated outside the field of cracks that develops on the upper platform.

History

During the month of October 1968, members of the SIE – CEA explore a whole series of cracks located beside the gate of the Talarn reservoir, naming them Cova-avenc de la Comporta no. 1, 2 and 3. These explorations only appear recorded in a list of activities of the SIE from the year 1968 (EspeleoSie no. 6) and nothing more was ever heard of them.

Around the year 1979, members of the GES – CMB, during the research work for the Catàleg Espeleològic de Catalunya, rediscover the cavities, survey them and decide to name them with the place name of the area, els Nerets.
