Characteristics

Location

The cave is located in Horta de Sant Joan, in the Terra Alta. From the convent of Sant Salvador d'Horta, take the path that follows the circumvallation route of the mountain of Santa Bàrbara along the S face. Shortly after its start there is a turn-off leading to the hermitage of Sant Onofre and a little further on to the ruined chapel of Sant Pau. It is located above cave no. 1 and within the gully that originates there. Approximate coordinates.

The mountain of Santa Bàrbara forms part of a series of Oligocene conglomerate reliefs that act as a divide between the massif of the Port and the Ebro Depression.

Description

Morphology

It is a gallery about 34 metres long, semi-open. Still above it there is a rock shelter about 3 metres high by about 5 metres long.

Progression

The gallery, with an ascending ramp, reaches the end point where an ancient collapse can be seen that prevents passage.

History

Given its location, it seems obvious that it has been known since time immemorial. Legend says that the chapel of Sant Pau was the place of retreat of Sant Salvador and where the Virgin Mary appeared to him accompanied by Sant Pau.

The only purely speleological reference we know of is the one recorded by members of the SIRE – UEC Sants who visited and surveyed it in March 1981.
