Characteristics

Location

On the NE side of the mountain of Santa Bàrbara, close to the upper part of the cliff that faces the river Canaleta and above the chapel of Sant Antoni. Access can be made by car to the convent of Sant Salvador d'Horta and from there take the path that skirts the whole mountain.

The mountain of Santa Bàrbara forms part of a series of Oligocene conglomerate reliefs that act as a divide between the massif of the Port and the Ebro Depression.

Description

Morphology

Through a narrow and elongated entrance, divided in two by a rock bridge, one enters a pit 24 metres of very little width. At its bottom, a narrow passage that was cleared in 1971 allows progress along the diaclase until reaching a new vertical section, this one of 14 metres. At the end of the diaclase, a new pit of 10 metres allows reaching the final galleries where the maximum depth is attained.

History

Discovered and explored by members of the then incipient SIRE – UEC Tortosa on 19 March 1971 who descended the first pit. They returned on 9 May of the same 1971 and after a clearing at its bottom they were able to continue the exploration to the point of maximum depth.

We have evidence that during the first half of the 1960s, members of the GIE of the CE Gràcia carried out a series of explorations in the area of Horta de Sant Joan and among the many cavities visited, of most of which we only have the name, one is mentioned as Avenc de Santa Bàrbara and we think it could be the same one, although it is no more than a conjecture.
