Characteristics

Location

Torrelles de Llobregat. We will position ourselves at the Raval Mas; here one must follow carrer del Raval, at the end of which it becomes a track heading to Can Mas, currently a holiday camp. Follow the track until reaching the col of the serra de Can Valent, the boundary with the municipality of Cervelló; we will have covered 1,650 metres. The col forms a flat area where we can leave the vehicle; on the left-hand side, heading West, a path sets off which, more or less level, leads us over a route of about 350 metres to the first of the several caves of Can Mas.

Description

Morphology

A wide and high entrance gives access to a perpendicular joint, which on the right-hand side presents an ascending ramp that places us at +5 metres of height; on the left-hand side a short ascending ramp places us in a narrower passage where a descending ramp begins that leads us outside through a second entrance.

Its genesis is basically the product of wind erosion on the red sandstones of the Buntsandstein (Triassic) and conglomerates of the Buntsandstein (Triassic), entirely similar to that of the neighbouring balmes de Bruguers (Gavà). It presents the peculiar alveolar forms of this type of “taffoni”.

Progression

A wide and high entrance gives access to a perpendicular joint, which on the right-hand side presents an ascending ramp that places us at +5 metres of height; on the left-hand side a short ascending ramp places us in a narrower passage where a descending ramp begins that leads us outside through a second entrance.

History

N. Font i Sagué, on page 148 of his Catàlech (1897) quotes verbatim:

Torrelles de Llobregat. 144) Coves de Can Mas.- Són varies y estan situades en la montanya qu'ils dóna nom.

Later this citation is picked up by Faura i Sans (1909) and still later, by Llopis Lladó in the first editions of the Ordal maps of Editorial Alpina. Despite this, no data are given for these cavities.

It is not until April 2018 that a fellow hiker tells us about some spectacular caves in Torrelles de Llobregat. A simple internet search on different blogs and hiking routes (wikiloc) gives us news and images of some caves excavated in the Triassic sandstones and located above Can Mas. The great majority of these references call them Coves de Can Riera (taking as a reference the house located not far away, but in the municipality of Cervelló). Others also call them Cova Vermella and Cova Bonica.

There is no doubt that these curious cavities, well known for a long time by hikers, are none other than those cited by Font i Sagué more than 120 years ago.
