Characteristics

Location

The Cova Llòbrega is located in the Serra de Cardó, in Rasquera. From Rasquera you must go up to the Cardó spa, where you can park. You must turn back, passing by the ermita de Sant Elies and continue to the path that soon leads to the ermita de la Santíssima Trinitat and from there continue along the camí dels Frares until reaching the Portell de Cosp. From there you must continue to the refugi de la Font del Teix; the path climbs and reaches the aforementioned spring. A large rocky point on the left, the Roca de Migdia, forms a col through which the path passes. To the right of the col and sheltered by a large cliff face opens the entrance of the Cova Llòbrega.

An alternative route can be taken from km 16.6 of the road from el Perelló to Rasquera, where, on the left, a track begins, asphalted in its first stretch and thereafter dirt, which leads us to the font de Múrria and from there to the refugi de la Font del Teix.

Description

Morphology

Through a high entrance, more than 5 metres, one enters a single gallery about 10 to 15 metres long.

No survey is available, so the speleometric data are approximate.

Other details

The access itinerary is highly recommended because of the massive presence of monumental yews (Taxus baccata), some of them millennia old.

History

Known since ancient times as la Llòbrega to distinguish it from the relatively nearby cave which, with two entrances, is illuminated and is known as la Lluminosa.

Cited by Faura in his Recull (1909) and by Ferraté in Espeleologia de les comarques tarragonines (1918), although neither gives more data than the name.

We know of no specific cataloguing work, although it is very well known to hikers.

It seems that in other times it was used to keep flocks.
