Description
Morphology
Inside a depression about 3 metres in diameter, a gallery opens in a sloping passage that leads into a wide chamber with two levels. Following the entrance gallery, on the right, the ramp continues and reaches a flat stretch. Above is an upper level formed by a large chaos of blocks. Towards the N of the chamber the lower level is regained and the height of the passage section drops noticeably, keeping its width for a few metres and then entering a narrow gallery with a triangular section. Further on, the gallery becomes a small group of reticulated passages and in the last stretch, after an upward step, one enters a chamber of greater height which at one end has an area of clastic products and on the middle wall a very narrow passage appears.
Speleothems
The upper level of the chamber has stalagmitic formations.
Hydrology
The flat stretch is normally covered by a shallow body of water. The narrow gallery with a triangular section runs through the middle of the small temporary watercourse. Through a very narrow passage in the final chamber flows the water that temporarily circulates through the cavity.
Progression
The route estimated by the companions from Tortosa is 117.6 metres; in contrast, the survey carried out by the ERE estimates a slightly longer route: 134 metres.
History
We have no data or references prior to the exploration by members of the SIRE – UEC Tortosa (later EC Tortosa) in September 1979.
In February 1981, members of the ERE – CEC, unaware of the previous exploration, were accompanied by a shepherd to the cavity, explored it and surveyed it, naming it Cova de Serrassoles.
