Location

From Alòs de Balaguer, we will follow the Segre river downstream along its hydrographic right bank; just leaving the village we will find on the left a bridge that crosses the river. We will follow the track on the right of the river and, after 925 metres, we will find on the right of the track a recreation area with a spring, tables and a barbecue. We will follow the track another 500 metres, where on the right we will find a marked ascending path that in 475 metres of route and 110 of elevation gain will take us to the cave.

Description

Morphology

The original cave is quite masked by the archaeological excavation. Currently the plan at the level of the mouth presents a collapse resulting from the excavation of 2.50 metres; the floor rises in a gentle slope until 6 metres further on we find a step of 1.65 metres, recovering the height at the same level as the mouth. A new step of 0.94 metres places us at the highest point of the cave. The cave itself is formed by a rectilinear conduit 10.50 metres long.

Other details

The floor of the cave's porch, as well as part of the terrain located to the W and slightly sloping, is the object of the archaeological excavation.

History

The cave was discovered for archaeology in 1974, when the resident of Artesa de Segre, Rafel Gomà, known as “Parco”, made it known to Dr. Joan Maluquer de Motes. Previously it had been used to keep livestock.
