Characteristics

Location

From the Sant Julià de Cerdanyola sewage treatment plant we will follow the path that climbs to the 'Forcat' and continue along a difficult, somewhat steep little trail that passes along the N face of the Serra del Candara and the Cingles dels Banyadors; along the way we will come across some green and blue paint marks that will lead us to the cave; at the point on the path painted with a green arrow, a steep descent must be made through the forest and off-trail in order to reach the level of the cave.

Description

Morphology

It is accessed through two entrances; the upper one gives access to a descending gallery with a low ceiling; at the end of the gallery, on the left, we find the passage that comes from the lower entrance; this passage has a fairly narrow squeeze before emerging outside. At the bottom of the main passage there is a small chamber. The vertical drop is 2 metres and the length is 21 metres.

History

A cavity unpublished speleologically, but known to the local people; Josep Casals of Sant Julià de Cerdanyola located it more than 15 years ago. The history of the cave is linked to the maqui Marcel·lí Massana, a native of Berga and a good connoisseur of these mountains. This command of the terrain allowed him to carry out his guerrilla activity with impunity, together with other collaborating members such as the Pons brothers, en Ramonet Xic, Antoni López, en Ros, since these knew every corner in order to hide and evade the surveillance and pursuit to which they were subjected by the Guardia Civil. Among the hiding places are two caves that bear the name 'Cova del Massana' in his honour. One is this one in Guardiola de Berguedà. The other is in 'La Quar'. It seems that his main base of operations was on the S slope of Picancel, while the cave located in Guardiola he used only sporadically and for short stays, especially when he wanted to control the passage through the Llobregat valley, as it is located at a strategic observation point.

Bio

At the bottom of the main passage there is a small chamber where we find bat droppings.
