Characteristics

Location

Past the municipality of la Nou de Berguedà, we will head to the hamlet of Malanyeu where we will park the car. From the church of Sant Sadurní we will follow the short-distance path PR-CC199 (white and yellow horizontal marks).

We will pass near can Frare and cal Vinyeta to cross the torrent de Malanyeu over a footbridge.

We will ascend until reaching the characteristic pas del Grau. Once past it, the cave is on the left-hand side. First we will find the already catalogued cova dels Rats-penats (or avenc del Grau), and a little further on, and higher up, the cova del Grau.

All in all an easy approach of about twenty minutes.

Description

Morphology

The main entrance or no. 1 is located in a collapse of an important joint. Its dimensions are 3×3.20 metres. We are in a gallery that we will call the upper one, 11 metres long; at about 5 metres we find some drops of r-1.10, r-1, r-1.50 metres that lead us to an intermediate gallery about 5 metres long. We move among boulders, some very unstable. Here we can descend through a crawlway to a small chamber 1.30×1.30 that communicates again with the previous gallery.

We also find an r-1.20 that leads us to a crawlway-ramp.

This point, in principle without continuation, is where Jordi, sensing a gallery at his feet, clears a passage to an interesting gallery.

We will overcome this ramp crawlway that leads us to a P-2.50 that deposits us on the floor of the lower gallery. Here we see ourselves obliged to warn possible explorers that the entrance is easy, but not so the exit, for which reason we advise equipping it well, and carrying stirrups to be able to exit through entrance 3.

The gallery is about 3 metres wide and 5 to 7 metres high.

If we go in a Northerly direction, we will climb an earthy ramp 7 metres long, until reaching a second exit, which because of its narrowness, we were unable to pass (0.30×0.30 metres). About two metres before reaching this second entrance, through an r+1.80 metres we access another upper gallery that ends at 4 metres of length. This small gallery is 3.40 metres high by 0.70 wide.

Returning to where the rope left us, we find a couple of small pits between boulders (r-2, r-1.60), without practicable continuation.

If we go down, between boulders, towards the South, at 5 metres, on the left wall we access a narrow descending gallery 5 metres high by 0.40 metres wide that narrows at 8 metres of length.

Returning to the main gallery we will advance about 6 metres where we find an ascending fissure that because of its narrowness (0.25 metres) does not allow the explorer to pass. The interesting part of this conduit is the one that leads to the outside through the entrance we call 3.

An exterior polygonal survey relates the three existing entrances.

If we go to the aforementioned entrance 3, which is further to the West, we will access through an entrance 5×2.50 metres, by means of a P-3.20, at the bottom of the joint we will find the connection with the area of the cave described above.

We will continue descending among boulders, mostly unstable, and finding small branches and small pits, so characteristic of clastic caves, and without apparent continuation.

We will descend a P-3.70 that deposits us in a gallery about 5 metres high and 0.80 metres average width.

Heading towards the South we will travel about twenty metres overcoming some drops and reaching the maximum depth of the cave at -23 metres.

If on the other hand, we go towards the North, and descending a P-2.90, we will intercept another joint, 0.40 metres wide and 5 metres high.

This gallery ends at 3 metres if we go to the right, and at 2 metres if we go to the left.

History

Located in 2024 by Jordi Navarro and Montse Mañosa (CE Castellar). In July of the same year, accompanied by members of the GE Badalona, they begin the exploration of the cave, which cannot be completed until October in order to review some pending unknowns.
