Characteristics

Location

To the E of Cal Mandil. To reach it, follow the track for 400 m after the mas del Mandil in the direction of Vallespinosa; just on reaching the first bend to the left, before descending towards the spring, stop the vehicle (4x4) and continue in the direction of the ravine along a faint path and, as you approach it, gradually turn to the left without losing too much elevation. From where the vehicle is left there are just about 200 m.

Description

Morphology

Wide entrance where the limestone strata are very clearly visible (the ceiling is bounded by a bedding plane). The entrance vestibule is split in two and gives rise to a second entrance which, after a few metres, joins the main one. At the back of the vestibule, a narrow passage communicates with a gallery with a low ceiling and slightly descending that leads to the final stretch made up of some gateres that after a few metres become impenetrable.

All the surveys are missing a branch that leaves to the right of the third small chamber, which has not been surveyed and which after a narrow passage consists of a couple of small chambers, with a low ceiling. With this small gallery the route of the cave will increase by a few more metres.

History

Known by the people of the area since time immemorial as Cova del Diable. The first speleological reference to the cavity is given by F. Español who, in his biospeleological research, visited it on 24-9-1934 and calls it Cova del Mandil, in reference to the nearby mas.
