Description
Morphology
Large mouth of 14 x 17 metres and on its W side a rock ramp leads to sea level. A chaos of large blocks allows ascending through the main gallery up to the final stretch where the descending ceiling, the blocks and the sediments choke the cavity. From the chamber a narrow passage of 7 metres in length emerges in an ascending direction with a block wedged between its walls.
Two holes in the floor, one at sea level and the other about ten metres further in, allow access to a flooded gallery of between 2-4 metres in diameter developed beneath the main gallery and basically between a chaos of blocks with a 4 metre branch on the W side. The underwater route is 32 metres.
Above the mouth and on its W side we find two small galleries: the upper one, which climbs 5 metres, and the lower one, 10 metres in length and with the floor covered by Sand.
The total height difference is 21.5 metres (-4.5; +17) and the route is 77 metres, of which 32 are underwater. The route of the small upper cavities is not included.
Hydrology
It should be noted that this submerged gallery is active. The flow it provides is significant enough that in summer and in the final stretch a clear temperature difference is noticed between the fresh water and the sea water.
In times of rough seas it is dangerous to approach the water and during strong storms the water comes to invade the whole chamber, as testified by the remains left by the sea.
History
Known since remote times by the sailors of the area and especially by the rod fishermen.
The first speleological mention is the one published in 1968 by members of the GE Talaia (we do not know the date of the survey). Recently an unpublished survey made by members of the ERE – CEC in 1965 has appeared, calling it Cova de Punta Ferrosa.
In June 2013, members of the EC Gràcia make a couple of visits and produce a more careful record and survey.
In July 2015, Josep Maria Cervelló, who had long had a special interest in the cavity and accompanied by Martí Romero (all from the ERE-CEC) make a new visit and with the sea very calm observe the pits between the blocks of the entrance. With a short dive they can confirm that at a lower level a submerged gallery develops. A few days later they return with more personnel and especially with Hilari Moreno Jr., who with diving equipment can explore it fully.
