Characteristics

Location

About 2 km south of the village, following the road towards Mequinensa one finds a turn-off to the left that climbs towards the hill where the hermitage of sant Jaume stands; the cave is beside it.

The hill where the hermitage is located is a fairly strategic site, as it dominates the valleys of the Segre and the Cinca.

Description

Morphology

The cave chapel is south-facing and measures about 9 metres wide by 5.20 m deep and about 2 m high. Outside, a stone wall joined with mortar runs along the whole cavity, with the door as the only opening.

On the west side there are remains of a stretch of wall that closed the enclosure, which made use of a space of 3 by 2 m and about 1.50 m high.

Speleothems

Inside, in front of the door, one can see an altar-niche 1 metre wide, 1.20 high and about 80 cm deep. On the east side there are two niches of 40 by 50 cm and beside the door another niche of about 30 by 30 cm.

History

This elevated spot, from which one enjoys good panoramas both towards the west and towards the north where the confluence of the Segre and the Cinca can be seen, and near the ravine of the torrent de sant Jaume, offered a good place for eremitic life, as corroborated by the various niches inside the cavity. It seems that the lands of this cave were attributed miraculous and healing properties.

It is said that this spot could be related to a Camí de Sant Jaume that went up along the Ebre and the Segre until it met the Saragossa road, branching off through La Granja d'Escarp and Massalcoreig.
