Characteristics

Location

Large overhanging rock shelter in the torrent de Comabona (Saldes). Following the track that leads from Gisclareny to Gresolet, once past the Coll de Bauma (previously called: Coll de la Balma) we will continue to the second bend where we will leave the car. At this point we will take a path that, on a steep slope, brings us level with the cave. It is necessary to traverse across to it, arriving by its upper part.

Description

Morphology

Large and wide rock shelter, with a rising floor that ends about 16 m from the entrance. At this point, the wall rises about 17 m until reaching an overhanging zone where any possible continuation ends.

Progression

To reach the overhanging zone a climb is required, first over good rock and on the final stretch over tufa.

Other details

Note from Espeleoíndex: Despite its visibility and dimensions, we have no record of its existence in speleological catalogues.

It now turns out that we have two caves in Saldes with the same name: Roset, and they are not very far from one another. The first of them was explored by members of the GE Badalona in January 1983 and, as the colleague Paco Miret explained years later, in an amusing article that appeared on the blog Espeleobloc (La Cova del Roset, o no – 23-5-2013), they found the cavity by chance, while taking a walk to go and prospect the upper part of the ridge. So they chose to name the cave with the nearest toponym they found on the Editorial Alpina map. It must be said, however, that the toponym Roset only appears on the Alpina maps: les Costes del Roset, whereas on the ICGC map it only says: les Costes. For the moment then, and until more data on the matter is known, two nearby cavities with the same name will have to coexist.

History

The first known access to the cave was carried out by Yolanda Asensio and Jordi Francès. On this first visit they observed that some holes could be made out up in the ceiling, but the wall had to be climbed to reach them.

On a second visit, carried out by Benjamí Granyena, Lluís Calvet and Jordi Francès, they climbed the overhang and were able to verify that it was a simple overhang that led nowhere.
