Large rock shelter about 90 metres wide in Cabacés.

Characteristics

Location

From Cabacés we will follow the track that runs parallel to the barranc Tancat towards the Foia recreation area. After covering 1.57 kilometres, on the left of the valley we will see la Covassa; we will head towards it and follow a path that from the building follows the base of the cliff in a W direction, descends to an olive grove and continues along the base of the cliff until entering another valley. Here we find an old path repaired with dry stone; we will follow it to the left and it will lead us to the rock shelter; the route from la Covassa is about 280 metres.

Description

Morphology

It is an enormous rock shelter about 90 metres wide and 17 metres deep with an average height of 8 metres at the entrance and almost 2 metres in the inner part.

Hydrology

On the N side of the Balma the waters of the barranc Tancat enter, which in this stretch, except in the rainy season, runs dry, but over time it has excavated the interior of the rock shelter, forming some gours and leaving the bed of the same well marked by erosion. After having covered three quarters of the rock shelter, the course of the torrent exits it to continue its way towards Cabacés.

History

Cavity known since ancient times in the area.
