Characteristics

Location

We will have to leave the car at km 2.5 of the B.112 road and continue on foot in the direction of Monistrol for about 50 metres to an incipient stream, which we will go up gaining height, passing through the Mentiroses de Collbató. On our right, a few metres above the base of the cliff, we will see the mouth of the cova del Mussol. The cova dels Ducs is located below the cova del Mussol.

The cova de la Carme is displaced about 12 metres from the cova dels Ducs in an E direction, 5 metres below it and next to a very steep drop in the rocks. The final stretch to reach the cavern is a little rough.

Description

Morphology

A mouth 1 metre wide by 80 centimetres high gives way to a crawlway 20 metres long. In this, a narrow passage at 8.50 metres (50 x 25 cm) must be negotiated, which gradually widens until reaching, towards the end, (2 m x 90 cm). At the end of this crawlway there is a small step that leads into a descending ramp 7 metres long, 60 centimetres wide and 3 metres average height, which ends in a block that momentarily obstructs the possible solution of continuity.

History

During the study campaigns in the Collbató area directed by N. Llopis and J.Mª Thomas (GES – CMB) in the late 1940s, they locate this cavity, confusing it with the nearby cova dels Ducs, and give it this name, but in the singular. This error is already noted by Jordi Mor (GEP) in his work on the sector (1973). On that occasion they do not go beyond 10 metres from the entrance, being unable to overcome the narrow passage.

During the GE Pedraforca campaigns in Montserrat in 1971 they relocate it and are able to overcome the narrow passage, making the complete exploration. In order not to continue with the confusion of the name, they decide to call it cova de la Carme.

We update the record (February 2016), with the inclusion of a new survey, until now unpublished, made by members of the GES-CM Terrassa who visited and surveyed it during the months of January and February 1976, in the course of the cataloguing work they were doing in Montserrat for the third volume of the Catálogo espeleológico de la provincia de Barcelona and which was never published.
