A cave with 23 metres of passage in the torrent del Bosc (Castell de Mur), with two access routes and a gallery that divides into two levels.

Characteristics

Location

The cave is located in the torrent del Bosc, in Castell de Mur.

It can be reached by two routes. The first starts from the C-13 from the car park in front of the barranc del Bosc: you must go back up the path that skirts the barranc del Bosc until it crosses the torrent and climbs up the canal de Sòls to reach the cave.

Another easier route is to take the track that leaves the C-13 at kilometre 74.08 and passes under the railway line; you must keep to the left following the signs for the barranc del Bosc. We will find a barrier that is closed at certain times of the year (mainly in summer). After covering about two kilometres (a four-wheel-drive vehicle or similar is recommended), we will find a sign for the barranc del Bosc; an uphill path will take us to the ridge, which we will follow eastwards until it begins to descend towards the barranc del Bosc. Shortly after starting the descent we will turn left towards the base of the cliff along a faint path that will take us on a short route to the cave.

Description

Morphology

An entrance of approximately 7 by 12 metres gives access to a gallery with a total passage of 13 metres and an average width of 5 metres. At 4 metres along we find that the gallery divides into two levels: a lower one with a passage of 6.57 metres by 3.39 metres wide and 1.36 metres high, in the ceiling of which there is a small impassable hole that connects with the upper floor.

To reach the upper floor it is necessary to climb a 1.66 metre high step, where the rest of the gallery has a passage of about 10 metres. On the right-hand side we find a short ascending gallery that reaches a level of + 5 metres with respect to the entrance.

Speleothems

The short ascending gallery on the right-hand side has formation in some places.

Progression

To reach the upper floor it is necessary to climb a 1.66 metre high step.

History

Known since ancient times and used to shelter flocks of sheep; later it was used as a shelter by climbers.

Toponymy: cited in the ICGC cartography as Cova de Grabiel (sic), a toponym that we have respected, even though it is an incorrect form of Gabriel.
